I thought "Machine Head" was our best album after "In Rock," and after that, I couldn't see the way that we were writing songs. I was writing about 80% of the stuff. I was writing the riffs, the chord progressions, most of the arrangements. Ian came up with a few rhythms and sometimes Roger wrote something and Ian Gillan wrote all the lyrics. I was running out of ideas. Certain people were getting credit for writing songs that weren't writing songs, so that didn't help. It started off on "Machine Head" because I started saying "All right, I'm cutting down on my ideas because it's a five way split, but it's not a five way thing." I was doing 80% of it. I wanted to change that
