Today I met a guy who owns one of these mahogany Bach Telebasses. So I got to test it myself
Now what does it sound like?
Well... like a Precision bass... but warmer. It has the same "direct" feel that a P-bass has. But with the charm of an oil-finished mahogany instrument.
These kind of basses (P, J) are very simple in their set-up. Not exactly rocket-science is it?
The Bach Telebass is no exception.
Body: Flawless. A beautiful chunk of wood with a nice open grain.
Neck: Straight. Oiled. Same grain as the body.
Fretwork: Good. Maybe a bit rough on the edges. I think I would polish the sides somewhat.
Bridge: Simple. Not string-through like the original ones.
Tuners: Open gear. Okay. No need to replace
Pickup: Seemed alright to me. Nice round woody tone. Vintage enough for me. Not too excessive in the lows and highs.
Pots: I was not convinced. They seemed to work alright but they didn't run real smooth.
I just tried it in someones attic. Not in a band situation. But my first impression was very good. Especially if you keep in mind that it costs less than a quarter of what a '51 Precision reissue costs...
cheers, Rob
I'm ordering one monday...
